Lost dog!!! Perro perdido!!!

Amigos queridos, hacía mucho que no los veía, una vez más! Lxs extraño mucho, aunque por mi ausencia no lo parezca. Hoy estaremos revisando un tema muy interesante y que a lo largo de mi corta vida me han preguntado mucho, por que como saben ya, algunas veces me he visto en la comprometida situación de rescatar a un animal que está en la calle. Ahora les cuento más o menos que hacer y como actuar ante ello.

Dear friends, long long time has passed since the last time, again! I miss you all so much, even when my prolonged absence doesn't show it much. Now we will be looking over a very interesting subject that I have been asked a lot during my short life, because, as you probably know, I have been sometimes in the compromised situation of having to rescue an animal from the streets. Now I'll tell you what to do and how to act about it, kind of. 

Pensemos ahora una situación ficticia, digamos esta que me es tristemente familiar: iba pasando por un parque, pensando en el butt de John Boyega, cuando unos pequeños ojitos me observaron desde lo lejos: un animalillo doméstico perdido, demasiado pequeño, lastimado o buscando a sus dueños estaba mirándome desde una prudente distancia. Como mi corazón está hecho en su totalidad de pollo, pues me he llevado a mi casa varios animales :s, a los cuales posteriormente puse en adopción. Esta situación es ya conocida por varios de mis amigos y conocidos, y ahora, ustedes lectores, están al tanto de ello. Quiero hablarles un poco sobre que hacer ahora que tienen un animal que, desde luego, ustedes no esperaban, y con el que probablemente no vayan a permanecer, quizá no por gusto de ustedes sino por las características de su hogar o las reglas del mismo. Les pondré algunos puntos:

Now, off we go on a fictional situation, let's say this one, which is sadly known to me: I was walking through some park, thinking about John Boyega's butt, when I noticed some little eyes looking at me from afar: a little domestic animal either lost, too little, hurt, or looking for their owner, watching me from a wise distance. I'm completely made of softie material, so I have taken many animals to my house :S, to which I had to find a home later. This situation is also known to many of my friends and acquaintances, and now you my (few) readers are also aware of it. I want to talk to you a little about what to do now with this animal who of course you weren't expecting, and you probably don't intend to keep, maybe not because of yourself but the place where you're living, it's rules and characteristics. So here are a few things to consider:

• Al encontrar este animalito, lo primero que deben hacer es tomarle fotografías. Éstas deben ser lo más claras posibles, y se han de apreciar las características físicas más representativas, como el color del pelaje y los ojos, si tiene cicatrices o características especiales, como la falta de alguna extremidad, la cola cortada, etc. Los animales son super hermosos, así que traten de sacarles fotos que resalten lo mejor de cada uno de ellos.
• At the very first time you encounter this little friend, you should take pictures of them. They have to be as high quality as possible, and it must be possible to look at every important physical trait, like fur color and length, color of eyes, if there are any scars or special characteristics like any missing limb, the tail shortened, etc. Animals are super cute, so try to take pictures that make them look as good as they can!

• Cuando estén en casa, es importante fijarse si llevaba collar, placa, etc. A veces algunos dueños no le ponen a las placas datos de las mascotas, sino solamente su nombre, es importante registrar esos datos, así como la forma de la placa o color de la correa, si acaso la llevaba.
• When you get home, look for any tag or neck piece. Sometimes, owners don't put any contact data and just give their pets a tag with their names on it. It's important to register all that, and the shape and color of the tag, if they have them.
• Si pueden, deben llevar al animalillo al veterinario, quien les ayudará a determinar la edad aproximada que tiene o algún otro dato importante que deban saber con urgencia.
• If it is possible for you, you must take the little guy to the vet, who will help you to determine the approximate age of them or any other important thing you must know.
• Muy relacionado con el punto anterior: en este momento, USTEDES son los héroes de este animal. Ustedes pueden ayudarlo a cambiar su vida, y ahora debo decirles la verdad más cruda al respecto, sobre la que he recibido muchas preguntas: no hay ningún lugar, veterinaria, albergue, antirrábico, etc., que les reciba a este compañero y le pueda brindar un hogar. Lo más cercano que encontrarán es, probablemente, algún antirrábico donde van a dormir a este amigo. Esto, por supuesto, me imagino que no es la idea más agradable para ustedes (para mí, claro está, no lo es). El problema de sobrepoblación de gatos y perros es en verdad grande, y no es hora de hablar de ello, simplemente de comentarles que debido a las proporciones que tiene, es virtualmente imposible que ustedes encuentren un lugar en el que alguien se haga cargo de la tarea que ahora tienen por delante. No les digo esto para desanimarlos de recoger algún animal o ayudarlo, es para que conozcan que en verdad la labor que están por hacer es heroica y grande, y la única satisfacción que tienen es el bienestar de este animal. *
• Very related to the last thing: in this moment, YOU are the hero of this animal. You can help them change their life, and now I must tell you the hardest truth about this matter, about which I have gotten lots of questions: there's no place, vet, shelter, animal control center or anything else that can get this animal from you and give them a house. The closest thing you will maybe find is some kind of government facility that will put them down. This, of course, I think is not what you want (me neither!). The overpopulation of (mostly) dogs and cats is really big, and this is not the time to talk about that, but to simply remark that due to the really overwhelming proportions of this problem is virtually impossible that you find a place where someone take care of this problem you now have. I don't say this to discourage you from taking an animal or helping them, is just for letting you know how big is the task you are going to do, how heroic and great it is, and how the only satisfaction you will get is this animal well-being.*
• Ahora que tienen todas estas cosas, lo que deben hacer es elaborar una imagen invitando a adoptar al pequeño. Es muy importante que la imagen contenga la siguiente información: junto con la imagen, o imágenes claras del animalito, su peso aproximado, tamaño, edad aproximada y si uds. le pusieron vacunas o desparasitación, así como cuidados especiales que requiera (si es ciego, le faltan extremidades, etc). Los datos de contacto de ustedes: facebook, correo y si gustan hacerlo, algún teléfono, donde encontraron al animal y en que condiciones (hipotermia, herido, etc). La importancia de las fotos donde sus animalitos salgan super guapos es evidente en este momento: tienen que poner algo donde se vean preciosos y así llamen más la atención de posibles adoptantes. Ahora corran a difundirla en sus redes sociales! Busquen también mediante twitter o facebook grupos para dar animales en adopción en los que puedan postear su imagen también. • Now that you have all this things, you must make a picture, inviting to adopt this animal. It must contain the following information: along with the photo or photos of them, their approximate size and weight, age, if they have any vaccines, and any special care they need (if they are blind, they are missing any limb, etc). Your own contact info: facebook, e-mail, and if you can, telephone number, where did you found them and in which condition (hypothermia, hurt, etc). Now you maybe notice why is important to take good and appealing pictures where this animal look as good as possible: you have to get all the attention from people who may adopt them. Now, go and share your picture in your social media! Also look in twitter and facebook for groups dedicated to pet adoption in which you can post your pic. For example:
• Una vez que publicaron la imagen y tienen todo listo, si sus nobles almas se los permiten, viene una parte más o menos complicada: elegir un dueño para este amigo. Si todo sale bien, deberán contactarlos al menos una vez (sigan insistiendo si no es así, no se desesperen). Si todo sale excelso y perfecto, los contactarán mas de 6 veces! me pasó al encontrar un dueño para una perrita hermosa llamada Kant. Deberán ahora asegurarse que su compañero animal tenga un dueño responsable y apropiado entrevistandose con el candidato. Deberá responderles, idealmente, algunas preguntas como porque quiere adoptar un animal, que espera recibir del mismo, si conoce el compromiso que ello implica y durante cuantos años (al menos la cantidad promedio de años que viva un animal de esta especie), si cuenta con suficientes recursos para hacerlo o una relativa estabilidad económica, un poco sobre sus gustos, etc.. Queremos evitar personas que adoptan y regresan a los 3 días diciendo que “no les gustó el perro” cuando simplemente no fueron pacientes con él, o gente diciendo que “el gato era muy agresivo” cuando los gatos, en especial los cachorros, son muy juguetones y para jugar arañan y muerden, lo cual se debe encauzar para que lo hagan con juguetes y no con las piernas de uno. Cuando te sientas seguro con un adoptante, debes  seguir en contacto con él en todo momento, yo sugiero un seguimiento de al menos 6 meses para asegurarte que todo sigue en orden. Para hacer este paso, te puedes apoyar en los cuestionarios de páginas como Mundo Patitas, que los tienen disponibles para personas que quieran adoptar allí.
• Now that you have your pic shared and you're all set, if your kind soul allow it, a kinda complicated part is approaching: choosing the possible owner for this pet. If everything goes well, you have to get contacted at least once (if it's not the case, keep trying, be patient). If everything is ripping and perfect, then you will be contacted more than 6 times! It has happened to me when looking for a home for a sweet dog named Kant. You must now make sure that the pet has a good and responsible owner, by talking extensively with them. He or she must answer, if possible, questions like why they want to adopt a pet, what they expect from them, if they know the commitment it requires and for how long (at least the lifetime of the animal), if they have enough resources to take care of them or some kind of stability, a little about their interests, etc.. We want to avoid people who take animals and then give them back 3 days after because "they don't liked the dog" when they simply weren't patient with them, or people who say "the cat was too aggressive" when a young cat just want to play and it happen to do it by biting and scratching everything, which must be channeled to play safely with toys and not with human legs. When you feel safe with some candidate, you must keep in touch with him all the time, for at least 6 months after to make sure everything is OK. For this step you can use as an example the questions provided by Mundo Patitas (in spanish) to adopt pets there.

Ahora que leyeron este super texto no me queda mas que agradecerles que hayan tenido el tiempo y la paciencia, y sobre todo, que tengan el deseo de ayudar a un pequeño que sin ustedes probablemente no estaría entre nosotros. De verdad, ojalá hubiera más personas como uds, mis estimados, cuentenme si les apetece si ustedes han tenido alguna experiencia con este tipo de situaciones y que hicieron para resolverlas, y si tienen algun consejo para esta entrada no olviden dejarlo por aquí! * Es importante también aclararles que yo poco puedo hacer por ustedes si se encuentran en esta situación. Sin embargo, estaré gustosa de ayudarles a difundir a su animalito para encontrar adoptantes. Ni quiero ni puedo adoptar más mascotas, y ciertamente no conozco un lugar donde puedan darlos en adopción por ustedes :( por más que eso me entristezca.
